What is cancer?
Cancer is the name given to a collection of related diseases. In all types of cancer, some of the body’s cells begin to divide without stopping and spread into surrounding tissues. Many cancers form solid tumours, which are masses of tissue. Cancers of the blood, such as leukaemia, generally do not form solid tumours.
When cancer develops, however, the orderly process breaks down. As cells become more and more abnormal, old or damaged cells survive when they should die, and new cells form when they are not needed. These extra cells can divide without stopping and may form growths called tumours. Some cancer cells can break off and travel to distant places in the body through the blood or the lymph system and form new tumours far from the original tumour.
Cancer cells are also often able to evade the immune system, a network of organs, tissues, and specialized cells that protects the body from infections and other conditions. Although the immune system normally removes damaged or abnormal cells from the body, some cancer cells are able to “hide” from the immune system. Tumours can also use the immune system to stay alive and grow. For example, with the help of certain immune system cells that normally prevent a runaway immune response, cancer cells can actually keep the immune system from killing cancer cells.
What are the symptoms of cancer?
Cancer symptoms can include:
A lump or sore that does not heal (including in the mouth)
A mole that changes in form, size or pigmentation
Change or damage to the skin that has not been present before and which increases
Bloody vomit, stool or urine, or a cough producing blood
Prolonged sore throat
Changes in bowel movement or urination
Inexplicable weight loss
Yellowing of complexion
What causes cancer?
Biological or internal factors, such as age, gender, inherited genetic defects and skin type
Lifestyle-related factors that cause cancer include:
UV radiation in sunlight
some food-related factors, such as nitrites and poly aromatic hydrocarbons generated by barbecuing food
Bacteria and viruses can cause cancer:
Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori, which causes gastritis)
HBV, HCV (hepatitis viruses that cause hepatitis)
HPV (human papilloma virus, papilloma virus, which causes changes eg. Cervical cells)
EBV (Epstein-Barr virus, the herpes virus that causes inflammation of the throat lymphoid)
Radiation can cause cancer:
ionising radiation (e.g. X-ray radiation, soil radon)
non-ionised radiation (the sun’s ultraviolet radiation)
Some drugs may increase the risk of cancer:
certain antineoplastic agents
medicines that cause immune deficiency
Cancer causing factors related to work and living environments include:
carcinogens such as many chemicals, radioactive materials
tar and pitch
polynuclear hydrocarbons (e.g. benzopyrene)
Some metal compounds
Some plastic chemicals (e.g. Vinyl chloride)
How to prevent cancer?
Healthy lifestyles can prevent cancer. Everyone should exercise regularly and have a varied diet. People need to eat plenty of plant products and fibre, and only very little red meat and saturated fat. Things to avoid are smoking, drinking, eating sugar, carbohydrates, fried food and too much exposure to the sun. You can take better care of yourself too by having regular medical check-ups and take part in organized cancer screenings.
